Presented at A Novel Idea – 1726 East Passyunk Ave., Philadelphia, PA 19148
Theatre Contra presents Dream-Rushes (a wonderland trip). Join us as we journey down a rabbit hole less explored.
In 1864 Charles Dodgson, commonly known as Lewis Carroll, presents a young girl named Alice Liddell with a hand illustrated book. In 1865, that book becomes a phenomenon. You know the story, you know the characters. But every story has a dark side.
This show is recommended for people aged 16+. Exploring the true story behind the creation of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, this show features deals with topics such as childhood trauma and manipulation of a minor.
Dream-Rushes (a wonderland trip) will be the Theatre Contra’s second full production following its inaugural show: The Lesson by Eugene Ionesco. The framing device of the true story behind the creation of Alice in Wonderland (as well as the relationship between Charles Dodgson and Alice Liddell) was chosen due to the unfortunate, and lasting relevancy to the news today including the “Me, Too” movement. By diving into the story and its characters as well as real life events, Theatre Contra will challenge and engross the audience and ultimately asks the question “is the art worth it”. Featuring an “opt-in” mechanic, the audience will have the opportunity to “go down the rabbit” hole for a new perspective.
DREAM-RUSHES opens on Friday, July 19 and runs through Sunday, July 28th
Ticket prices are $20 with discounts available for groups of 8 or more as well as Students and Industry. Visit theatrecontra.com/current.
The main floor of A Novel Idea is wheelchair accessible, however part of the show takes place in the location’s basement which is not wheelchair accessible. The audience has the opportunity to “opt-in” to this portion and is not required.
ABOUT Theatre Contra
Founded in 2016, Theatre Contra’s mission is to bring to life stories of conflict and conviction. We strive to engage the community and support the work of new voices while empowering the audience with involvement and choice.
Created from the gathering of nine local theatre artists and administrators (many of whom started their Philadelphia Theatre careers as Arden Professional Apprentices) following the sold out run of The Vs. Series at the 2016 Philadelphia Fringe Festival – described of “zany, gut-wrenching, and stimulating”—we hope to bring a unique artistic perspective to the Philadelphia Community. Following our inaugural production of Eugene Ionesco’s The Lesson, Theatre Contra created the Contra Reading Series: a series of “just left of cult” movie readings taking place at Tattooed Mom on South Street. This reading series is completely free and any donations went to creating more unique work.
Theatre Contra Company: Bryant Edwards, Christine Freije, Eliana Fabiyi, Jonathan Silver, Kailtyn Ide, Madeline Jones, Paige Martini, Ryann Carey, and Tara Bankard.
