The Philadelphia Chorus begins its 2018-2019 season with a concert featuring Honegger’s “Une Cantate de Nöel” & works by Brahms, Runestad and seasonal selections with: John Miles, baritone; Justin Gonzalez, tenor & the Julia R. Masterman School Chorus Honegger’s Une Cantate de Noël is his last work and one of his most popular compositions. The text of the cantata is derived from liturgical and popular texts—including Psalms and part of the Latin Gloria.
Honegger imbued the cantata with a dramatic sweep, viewing it as the progression of man from darkness into light. A notable feature is the intertwining of traditional carols in French and German: The combination of the different text forms creates a wonderfully uplifting effect and also represents the universality of the Christmas experience for Honegger.
